Ovular 5 Photography Workshops for Women will be held at Roptworks, ,women's land in southern Oregon, from June 11-18, 1983. For the fifth consecutive year, this community of women will eat, breathe and sleep photography for a week in lovely natural surroundings. This year the cost of Ovular 5 Workshop has been reduced to $125 for the entire seven days. This Includes vegetarian food, accommodations, use of the darkroom (with chemicals provided but not paper or film). A $50 registration fee is refundable until June 1. Ruth Page, world-renowned choreographer, teacher and author, will receive an honorary award at the Association of Ohio Dance Companies' Dance Festival '83 to be held at John Carroll University on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 3, 4 and 5. The annual festival will combine con. cert performances, seminars and panel discussions, and master classes in all disciplines of dance. Artists and fifteen dance companies from throughout Ohio will take part in the weekend program. Val DePriest and Gall Gingrich will perform at the Tenth Muse Women's Coffeehouse, Kent, Ohio, on June 4. Music starts at 9:30 p.m., and there is a $2.00 donation at the door.
The 12th annual conference of the International Women's Writing Guild will be held at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY, on July 22-29, 1983. The Guild is particularly known for non-elitist writing conferences which attract women of every age and background from every part of the U.S., Canada and also from abroad. Known for its profusion of workshop offerings and for furthering writing as a tool for personal as well as professional growth, the IWWG has been responsible in the past few years for the publication of 45 books by hitherto unpublished women writers. The Rock-Outts, a new women's band, will appear at the Women's Coffeehouse at the Civic on July 23. The music will consist of originals by Joanne O'Connor, Joye Gulley and Ingrid “Inky" Westberg. They play early rock, disco, and jazz with a very strong influence from the Beatles. Joye Gully, playing bass guitar, is a singer and songwriter, an artist and a marathon runner. Joanne O'Connor plays guitar and keyboards and supplies the lead vocals. Self-taught, she has played guitar since age 12 and keyboard since age 7. Along with Joye, she has performed in a group for three years. Ingrid "Inky" Westberg plays guitar and sings. She is a surrealist artist from Akron and did recording work in high school. Cindy Catalano, also from Akron, has played drums for nine years. She was a member of the Rhythmatiks at Miami of Ohio for a year.

The third annual Gay Composers' Concert will take place June 10, 1983 in St. Joseph's Church, 371 Avenue of the Americas, New York City. General admission will be $6 donation, with senior citizen and student prices of $3.50. The program will include a concert reading of a theater piece by Roberta Kosse, and songs by Kay Gardner. On Saturday, June 25, the Women's Coffeehouse will have ''open mike'' night. The Coffeehouse is held the fourth Saturday of each month at Center Hall in the Civic, 3130 Mayfield Road (near Lee) in Cleveland Heights. The 1983 Augusta Heritage Arts Workshop, a five-week festival of the traditional arts, will take place July 10-August 13, 1983 in Elkins, West Virginia, approximately 5 hours drive from Cleveland. An evening of films entitled Spirit and Strength: Women in Sports, sponsored and previewed by Oven Productions, will take place on Saturday, July 16, at 8:00 p.m., 2728 Lancashire Road, Cleveland Hts., Ohio. Admission is $3.50 at the door, and childcare will be available. The films include "Annapurna: A Woman's Place," chronicling the 1978 expedition which put the first women on the 10th highest mountain in the world, "Marathon Woman: Miki Gorman," the story of the runner who set world records and won the Boston and New York Marathons after a lifetime as a housewife, and "Women in Sports: A History," documenting the triumphs and breakthroughs women have accomplished in many different sports.
A Sizzling Summer Party, a benefit for the Women's Building Fund, will be held Saturday, August 27, from 9:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. at the Civic, 3130 Mayfield Road, Cleveland Heights. Donation at the door will be $5.00. Alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages will be available.
Marches, Rallies and Protests
A major anti-war protest has been called to take place in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, July 2, in response to President Reagan's escalation of the war in Central America. The "Call to Action on July 2" will begin at the Viet Nam Veterans Memorial; demonstrators will then march to the Shoreham Hotel, site that day of a gala Independence Day ball. The Reagan Administration's top civilian and military officials are invited to the ball and expected to attend.
In August, Cleveland women will join together for the fifth time in a Take Back the Night march. Prior to the march there will be an awareness week, addressing issues of violence against women. Support from the Cleveland women's community is earnestly needed. Volunteer your time. and show your support for this cricitcal cause. For more information, call Sandy at 221-3627.
The Greater Akron Area Chapter of the National Organization for Women is sponsoring a Take Back the Night march and rally on Saturday, September 7, to raise awareness in women and men of the inequity of living in fear. Akron NOW is looking for individuals and organizations to participate in this event.
